In 1951, the Volendam Opera Choir was established in a small fishing village on the shores of the IJsselmeer. Volendam is world-famous because of their traditional costumes. The choir consists of 100 men and women, who have made singing their most favourite hobby.
The choir archieved international reputation when the famous Intalian tenor Tito Schipa started his farewell tour in Volendam on an autentic fishing boat. Over the years the choir performed many times together with world-famous soloists from well-known opera houses like Govent Garden, La Scala, Wiener Volksoper, Teatro di Roma and the Metropolitan in Nw York.
Over the past 50 years the Volendam Opera Choir has given over 750 concerts both in Holland and abroad. The choir performed in Germay, France, Austria, Monaco, Hungary, Malta and Israel.
The Volendams Opera Choir has appeared on national and international television more than 50 times. The choir was also invited to sing during the visit of Pope John Paul II to Holland.
